VW’s Alex Smith says there are signs of downsizing as van users look to save on running costs

Making the right choice of van size

Popped along to the posh Coworth Park hotel near the Sunningdale golf course this week (Friday, Jan 24).

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles was holding an ‘editor’s lunch’ – basically an opportunity to demonstrate what’s been going on from a VW point of view. You can see VW Commercials boss Alex Smith doing his thing in the picture.

It’s the second time I’ve met Alex within the week – first time was at our Business Van Awards where the Transporter won Business Van of the Year.

However, after the party political broadcast, more engaging was the talk over lunch. One of the interesting items that Alex mentioned was that VW dealers were seeing more and more van buyers asking questions about fuel economy and van size.

“There’s no question that van buyers are choosing van size more carefully and that’s based on reducing the fuel consumption for their business. It’s a downsizing trend.

“We’re also seeing more businesses opt for long wheelbase models rather than high roofs. Again it’s based on reducing fuel costs.”

Is your business doing the same? Let me know.

A drink on the motorway? In fact it’s more about the food

A pub on the motorway? What numpty thought of that?

Friday night and I know we all like a pint or two down the pub. But on the road – at a motorway service station? Get off!

Frankly it’s all a bit daft – or so I thought until I went along to The Hope and Champion on the Beaconsfield services on the M40.

The place was rammed – on a Thursday lunchtime. And then I saw why.

This is a Wetherspoon’s pub. And the punters hadn’t come for the beer – they’d come for the good value grub, neatly sidestepping the rip off prices at the traditional motorway outlets.
