Renault Kangoo Van: economical operator

Renault Kangoo Van 1.5D ML19 dCi85 4D
What is it?
All-new Renault Kangoo, with lower payload option but with the bigger 85PS diesel engine. This is the kind of Renault Kangoo version that might appeal to a parcel courier – where payload isn’t the issue, but long-legged performance counts. Our test van has a lower trim level – the ML+ option gives a nearside door, plus further engine options and an auto box.
What's hot?
- Based on Scenic, so handling is more car-like than previous version
- Car platform means all-round disc brakes and standard ABS
- It’s bigger, both in terms of payload and cab roominess
- Excellent comfort levels, good in-cab storage, shelf above windscreen
- Economy from latest Renault diesel engines is excellent: 55.4mpg
- CO2 emissions are low as well – just 129g/km…
- The 85PS engine is cleaner than the 70PS 140g/km diesel Kangoo
- Simple handle-operated 180 degree opening of asymmetric rear doors
- Warranty terms are impressive – three years/100,000 miles
- Full steel bulkhead is standard fitment
What's not?
- No side doors on ML. And you can only specify a single, left-side door…
- …given the price of door options, opt for ML+ trim
- Noise insulation could be better, especially on the motorway
- Lacks innovation of Partner/Berlingo rivals (eg folding passenger seats)
- Basic spec: price goes up once you’ve added air con, metallic paint…

Business Van Manager Road Test Rating
It’s good, but is it the class of the field? The new Renault Kangoo is an improvement on old Kangoo in terms of refinement, driver comfort, load-carrying ability and fuel economy. But it’s just lacking in some of the nice detail touches that its rivals from Peugeot and Citroen have in abundance. Factor in a basic spec and you’ll need to up your budget for a desirable version. Having said that, higher spec means higher residuals. And that excellent fuel economy, plus low maintenance costs, means this van should make your short-list. But go for a Renault Kangoo in ML+ trim.
