Vauxhall Vivaro 2006-2014

Vauxhall Vivaro cut a dash in 2010

Vauxhall Vivaro in 2010

Replaced last year, we still think the first-generation Vivaro looks sharp and more modern than its years. On top of its looks, this Vauxhall commercial is easy to drive, has a comfortable driving position and is affordable to run.

When looking at any Vivaro, firstly check there’s paperwork to support regular cam belt changes. If there isn’t, this could lead to failure and lunching of the engine. Also watch for failing alternators, worn out brakes and engine management problems. A 2005/55 2700 DI SWB model with around 190,000 miles will cost around £1,200.

Volkswagen Caddy 2004-2010

Recently replaced again, but squint and the neat Caddy styling still looks the same as this one. On top of the contemporary looks, the Caddy boasts the same impressive build quality, comfortable interior and durable engines.

Check all the doors and door handles on any Caddy you look at, as these are known failure points. Look for evidence of a cam belt change at the correct 60,000 mile intervals and if the diesel pump’s electronic control unit has been changed.

Finally, watch for a crunchy gear change and failing heater motors. A 2006/55 Caddy 2.0D C20 panel van, with 185,000 miles will cost you £1,495.

Volkswagen Transporter 1990-2003

Replacement for the iconic T25 Transporter, the T4 eventually was launched back in 1990 and soldiered on to 2003. Although not looking as modern as some of the other models on this list, the T4 built up a reputation for being tough, well-made and easy to drive.

Look for evidence of regular maintenance, crunchy gear changes, knocking suspension and watch for structural rust problems. The most expensive ‘bargain’ van is the Transporter T4, as a 2002 2.5TDI 1200 model will still set you back £2,995 at 169,000 miles.
