Doblo LWB: extra length enhances space, ride

Fiat Doblo Cargo Maxi test Review: Mark Bursa

Fiat Doblo Cargo Maxi SX 2.0 MultiJet 16v Diesel Euro 5

What is it?

LONG-WHEELBASE, standard roof version of all-new second generation version of Fiat’s mid-sized panel van, slotting into the range between Fiorino and Scudo. The Fiat Doblo Maxi is based on the Grande Punto platform, guaranteeing good driveability, and this version has a bigger 2.0-litre diesel than the 1.6 SWB previously tested.

What’s hot?

  • Styling is a major improvement on the old Doblo…
  • …with a more rounded body with a very distinctive, bold face.
  • Interior finish is excellent, with high-quality plastics and materials…
  • …test van had fetching two-tone black/red interior
  • Excellent cab ergonomics: lots of useful pockets and storage bins…
  • …you even find them under the passenger seat cushion
  • Loadspace is square: takes two Europallets, with payload up to 1 tonne…
  • …and cargo area is well equipped: flush lighting and plastic floor protector
  • Cargo floor is very low, to minimise back strain when loading up
  • Feels very solid on the road, thanks to new bi-link rear suspension
  • Longer wheelbase makes for an even more stable ride
  • 2.0-litre engine gives extra torque over 1.6; CO2 is 148g/km
  • Class-leading 750g payload; loadspace is up with best in the sector
  • Big rear door handles allow one-finger access…
  • …and simple 180 degree opening

What’s not?

  • Wheelbase is longer, but side doors are the same
  • No high-roof option on LWB Doblo Cargo Maxi…
  • …if you need that much space, buy a Scudo, says Fiat
  • Despite all the pockets and bins, there’s no mobile phone pocket
  • Stop-start system boosts economy to 50.4mpg, just 4mpg less than 1.6…
  • …but we found the stop-start a little slow to kick in when restarting

Business Van Manager Road Test Rating

We liked the SWB Doblo, and we like the extended Fiat Doblo Maxi version even better. The attention to detail is excellent and looks much better than the old Doblo: payload, loadspace, driveabiity, comfort and fuel economy are all advanced significantly. The 2.0-litre diesel gives more torque if you carry heavy loads – and this version can carry a tonne. One downside was the stop & start system – while it helps boost fuel economy, it could be a little faster reacting on restart. A minor gripe though, on an excellent van.
