Rac Telematics

Safety scores – not only can telematics save fuel they can also save accidents

By using telematics we are able to monitor driver behaviour as well as remotely observe, for example, how harshly they brake and accelerate.

Management software turns the telematics data into reports highlighting when patrol vehicles are using more fuel, for example by idling for long periods or making unnecessary detours off the best route.

Drivers are given higher scores when they drive more safely and more efficiently and can access their own results via the mobile data terminal in the van. This ensures that the patrol can view his or her own performance and take corrective action and it also leads to a bit of friendly competition between patrols.

The benefits are clear. Over the last two years we have successfully reduced our fuel bill by £1.8m, and whilst not all of this is directly attributable to telematics – driver behaviour and new vehicles contribute – a large proportion of the benefit can be directly or indirectly attributed to the little black box.
