WITH the Best Crew Van award for 2015, it’s almost a case of ‘meet the new boss same as the old boss’ as the Volkswagen Transporter has come top again for another year. But this is not the same Transporter that won last year, no – as Volkswagen decided in mid-2015 to give us the latest T6 version of their iconic van.

Okay, on first look the T6 looks like a tweaked T5, but underneath the evolutionary styling there have been some major updates to the engines and interior.

Volkswagen Transporter Kombi

  • Gross vehicle weight: 3,000 kg
  • Payload: 1,224 kg
  • Load volume: 5.8 cu m
  • Fuel economy (combined): 40.4 mpg
  • CO2 emissions: 184 g/km
  • Price (ex-VAT): £17,436

van-awards1We already know how popular the Transporter panel vans are. So it’s nice to see that when compared to rivals, with its large load area and if you’re regularly carrying a crew to a job, the Volkswagen can cut the mustard too.

We also believe that the Kombi version of the T6 Transporter is likely to carry on a trend seen with the T5 as a tax-efficient duel use vehicle. A working van during the day, but with that extra bench seat practicality, plus sliding rear windows, the Transporter Kombi then transforms into a family vehicle.

Buyers who like creature comforts won’t be frightened away from the latest Transporter, as standard equipment levels are generous. Our entry-level winner, the Transporter Kombi 2.0 TDI T32 Startline SWB MR 102PS includes power and heated door mirrors, electric front windows, Bluetooth connectivity and a DAB radio. There’s also the benefit of a curvier dashboard with plenty of extra stowage.

This Transporter also benefits from the some of the latest technology previously debuted in Volkswagen car models, such as the Automatic Post-Collision Braking system.

The Transporter is as comfortable, refined and easy to drive as any Volkswagen car. The 102PS 2.0-litre TDi diesel now meets Euro 5 emissions regulations and there’s even a DSG semi-automatic transmission option for extra convenience if you need it.

Best Crew Van. What were the judges were looking for?

  • Vans that come with extras. That’s extra seats for five or more plus a load area behind the bulkhead. A growing sector that cuts down operating costs for SME van fleets.
  • Open to all crew vans up to 3.5t
