DIY racking in a van can be a killer
Graphic images showing the effect of unsecured van racking in a crash are a warning to self-employed trades people.
A test performed at the independent Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in Crowthorne, Berkshire showed the effect of an emergency stop.
As the van sled hit the barrier, the load shot forward, filling the cab space. Any van driver sitting there would probably have been killed.
According to van racking specialist Sortimo, those most at danger are self-employed tradesmen who have made racks in their vans to carry tools and spare parts. These might hold everything in place until the unexpected happens.
“The van doesn’t have to crash for the fatality to occur. An emergency stop on the motorway might be all it needs to create this potentially fatal situation,” commented Chris Jones, UK sales manager, Sortimo.
A repeat crash test with a professionally fitted Sortimo racking system showed that, while vehicle fittings were distorted in the direction of travel, the load remained in place.
