The Citan proved cheaper to finance than Rhodar expected

The third reason Rhodar went with Mercedes concerns the Citan and should interest businesses looking for small vans.

“When we heard Mercedes-Benz was launching a new small van into what is a fairly cut-throat market sector, we were concerned that it might be expensive”, said Stephen Haigh.

“In fact, the contract rates are highly competitive. The split folding rear seats, with attached bulkhead grille, also make it very flexible in use – we can mix and match the seating and load area depending on the needs of each job.”

The final reason for returning to Mercedes was operational rather than cost based.

Rhodar’s business involves transporting work crews and their tools and materials to remove asbestos. That means the vans have to tow decontamination units – effectively highly specialised caravans – for the crews to clean up after work.

The fact that the Mercedes Sprinters are fitted with Trailer Stability Assist is therefore important. It works with the vans’ adaptive ESP to counteract ‘fishtailing’ to make towing safer and easier for the crews.
