Towing trailers: you might need a tacho

Tacho adaptor for when weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes

ELECTRONICS firm Stoneridge has launched a digital tachograph adaptor for light commercial vehicles.

The adaptor is for vans and 4x4s which tow trailers and exceed the 3.5 tonne weight limit – bringing the operator inside the scope of EU rules on drivers’ hours. Until now, these vehicles were unable to have digital tachographs fitted due to the set-up of the gear box.

Stoneridge estimates that a typical installation of its Stoneridge M1N1 Adaptor will cost around £1,175 and can be carried out by registered digital tachograph agents.

Stoneridge reckons that many van operators are aware that if you use your 4×4 or light commercial vehicle for the carriage of goods, you may be subject to EU legislation requiring you to fit a tachograph to record the duty time and distance travelled.
