Home deliveries are driving the UK economy through the increase van sales reported by the SMMT, according to leading British automotive economist Prof Garel Rhys.
The tremendous growth of on-line shopping and the parcels industry has driven this boom
The emeritus professor with University of Wales Cardiff Business School said the van industry is a true barometer of business success or failure in the UK.
“We all know the High Street shops have been suffering but what is not often appreciated is the fact that we are still buying things and these have to be delivered by vans,” he said.
“The tremendous growth of on-line shopping and the parcels industry has driven this boom in van use and sales and I don’t see it slowing down.”
Figures from the SMMT showed it is the medium van sector which saw the biggest jump in sales last year, up 42% for those 2.0 to 2.5T and the 3.5T sector rose 19.5%.
