EUROPE’S best-selling van, the Renault Kangoo, is now available with Dual Clutch (EDC) automatic transmission for the first time.

This move brings the Kangoo in line with the car range and makes the Renault Kangoo EDC an even more impressive proposition. The innovative automatic gearbox is available on the dCi 90 and dCi 110 versions of the Kangoo with a host of benefits for the business customer.

An automatic transmission makes the Kangoo much more car-like so comfort and ease are improved.

The six-speed EDC transmission selects the ideal gear automatically with an electronic control unit. Driver input is the traditional ‘P-R-N-D’ type, but there is also a “manual” shift mode allowing drivers more control where required, or desired. A push forward on the gear lever directs the transmission to downshift, a pull backwards to upshift.

The automatic mode makes for a smoother and more relaxing drive thanks to an ultra fast shift time of 290ms. The transmission’s ‘creep’ control also makes life easier in heavy traffic, pulling away gradually when the brake pedal is released. The EDC transmission also offers Hill Start Assist as standard.

On the downside the EDC automatic transmission does add 28kg in weight compared with the manual, but with Renault’s efficient diesel engines offering up to 55.4mpg the difference is negligible and more than offset by the more relaxed driving experience. The increased weight is also compensated for with the Renault Kangoo EDC diesel engines being available with ECO mode which can cut fuel consumption by up to 10%.

In the interests of increased comfort the Kangoo’s cabin features a specially contoured height-adjustable driver’s seat with added lateral support, a height/reach adjustable steering wheel, and an ergonomically efficient layout for its controls.

The Renault Kangoo EDC is still a very practical proposition as a van, but the introduction of the automatic transmission means it’s a little more user-friendly, and a lot more comfortable to drive.
