Ford Transit

It’s terrific to drive, and the accommodation is more car-like than van-like

5. So is the number of passengers

The number of occupants that can be carried is also highly variable.

The Ford Transit can be supplied as a two to three-seater, a five to nine-seat Kombi, a Kombi-van or even a double-cab/van each offering six or seven seats.

The chassis cab can have a single or a double cab with between two and seven seats, while the minibuses accommodate 12 to 18 occupants.

There’s been a big focus on saving servicing and maintenance costs

6. What about the power?

The Duratorq diesel engines come in 100, 125 and 155PS outputs.

Ford says that buyers who choose powerplants with fuel and emissions-saving ECOnetic technology will save between £2000 and £2700 in fuel costs over four years/80,000 miles.

The ECOnetic engines have been improved, cutting their fuel consumption by six per cent, with the best offering 44mpg along with CO2 emissions of 169g/km.

7. Cost savings

Other cost savings include residual values improved by a remarkable £2575 compared with the previous Transit, service intervals extended to two years/30,000 miles and SMR (Service Maintenance & Repair) costs claimed to be more than £100 better than closest rivals.

8. Packed with practicality and technology

Advances in the new Transit stretch across bang-up-to-date new tech and clever little ‘Why doesn’t every one do that?’ touches.

Much of the Transit’s new technology has already been seen in Ford’s cars – lane assist is one of the features

Tech taken straight from Ford’s car range includes Bluetooth in every van sold, driver aids such as a lane-keeping alert to guard against falling asleep at the wheel, rear-view cameras and a newcomer dubbed Curve Control, which helps control the van when cornering.

Ford will also be fitting its voice-activated Sync connectivity system, which includes Smartphone-style Apps and a feature that calls the emergency services after an accident.

The little things haven’t been forgotten, though. A host of neat touches include a useful load step built into the rear bumper and lower than any rival’s, an easy-to-clean plastic loadspace covering that extends up the inside walls, and tie-down mounting points on those walls so you can carry panels and the like stacked vertically and keep the load floor clear.
