On duty: the pick-ups carry out a range of tasks essential to the airport’s airside operations

RELIABILITY and versatility are the key requirements for the pick-ups used to keep London’s City Airport running smoothly.

So the airport has just acquired three new Toyota Hiluxes – two HL2 models and an Invincible – as replacements for the three Hilux models that had been in service over the past few years.

Depending on the task, they’re are rigged with additional lighting, communications equipment and bird scaring devices.

London City, located in Docklands close to Canary Wharf and the financial heart of London, is a leading business airport with flights to more than 40 destinations across the UK, Europe and the USA.

Airfield operations manager Kevin Wincell told Business Vans: “The airfield operations team is responsible for making sure that the airfield is safe and running smoothly.

“They need to be able to mobilise officers quickly in an emergency and it is essential that we are able to have confidence in reliable, well-equipped vehicles.”

The Hiluxes were supplied through Hills Toyota Woodford Business Centre, which will also service the pick-ups. The purchase was funded via Toyota Financial Services.

The Hilux is available in Single, Extra and Double-Cab body styles, with a choice of 2.5- or 3.0-litre D-4D diesel engines and manual or automatic gearboxes.
