Mercedes-Benz Citan in virtual reality

Editor Morton gets to see the new Mercedes Citan without touching the metal - in virtual reality

Blog: RALPH MORTON

I’ve just had a good look around the Mercedes Citan – the all-new city van from the three-pointed star.

I was able to look at different colours, different trims: and I never left my iPad.

Mercedes has an extraordinary piece of new tech – you point the camera function of your iPad at a flat piece of paper (can be large and on the floor or as small as a business card) with what looks like a Citan that’s been run over – and suddenly it bursts into life.

It’s very impressive!

Mercedes says it means they will be able to show small business users the van more easily. A Mercedes salesman could come round to your office or depot, whip out his iPad, point it at the image (maybe busienss card-sized) and demonstrate the van.

All in virtual reality.

But Mercedes isn’t stopping there: the mk2 version in development will allow you to look around the interior and the load space.

Now that really is a smart business van. And all without ever getting near the metal!
