New petrol engines for Volkswagen CVs

  • Prices  from £13,610 for Caddy panel van, £15,110 for Caddy Life and £28,950 for Caravelle SE

VOLKSWAGEN is adding petrol-engined vans to its previously all-diesel commercial vehicles line-up.

The fourth-generation Caddy Life and Caddy panel van variants and sixth-generation T6 Caravelle are the first available to order with a petrol engine.

Prices are similar for petrol and diesel, but the petrol versions have higher CO2 and lower economy – such as around 50mpg combined for petrol Caddy against around 60mpg diesel.

A Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles spokesman said: “There isn’t huge demand but these mainly Life models – but also Caddy panel vans -are where we could see most demand and we are considering other panel van models such as Transporter.”

These powertrain combinations could be offered because they are already in production for certain other EU markets.

Prices start from £13,610 (basic RRP excl. VAT) for the 1.2 TSI 84PS 5-speed Caddy panel van Startline model, from £15,110 for the 1.2 TSI 84PS 5-speed manual Caddy Life and from £28,950 for the 2.0 TSI 150PS 6-speed manual Caravelle SE short wheelbase.

As with the diesel-fuelled Caddy and Caravelle models, the new petrol vans variants come with a full range of technology, comfort, convenience and safety features. These include a composition colour infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth, and Post-Collision Braking system, as well as additional options such as High Beam Assist, City Emergency Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control.

The new Euro 6 petrol engine range will comprise a 1.2 84PS 5-speed manual, a 1.0 102PS 5-speed manual and a 1.4 125PS with either the 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG gearbox available on both Caddy panel van and Caddy Life as well as a 2.0 150PS 6-speed manual and 2.0 204PS 7-speed DSG on the Caravelle SE short wheelbase (SWB) model.

The Caddy is the second best-selling model in Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ range after the Transporter. The fourth-generation Caddy panel van continues to be available in three trim levels – Startline, Trendline and Highline – and with short or Maxi wheelbases.  The Maxi version adds 469mm to the short wheelbase’s already generous 1,781mm and a load capacity of 4.2m3 (SWB 3.2m3).

Caddy Life and Maxi Life come with a significant amount of standard equipment, but there are also some desirable options available. These include Park Assist, which makes light work of manoeuvring into parking spaces, or Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which will keep you at a pre-set distance from the vehicle in front by regulating your speed in accordance with the traffic in front of you.

Volkswagen’s Caddy Life offers flexible seating for up to seven passengers, including the driver. The two rear rows of seats can be folded, double folded or removed to leave a loading space of up to 3,030 litres. The Caddy Maxi Life, with its extra 420mm length, offers an additional 340 litres, bringing the total loading area up to 3,370 litres.

The sixth-generation Caravelle SE SWB offers space and versatility for up to six passengers. It comes with twin sliding side doors as standard, designed to provide easy access for passengers and luggage. The rear seats are rail mounted to provide flexible and comfortable seating options and the safety and technology features included as standard are first class.
