While there are environmental benefits in creating low-emission zones, it comes at a cost to fleet operators looking to carry out their everyday operations, particularly in terms of route planning and guaranteeing delivery times. The adoption of cleaner, more efficient vehicles will go some way to address this issue.
Given the widespread extensions in replacement cycles that have been taking place since the pandemic there are many fleets that are operating at least a few vans that are 7-8 years old and will therefore probably be non-compliant
to be ULEZ-compliant, vans needed to meet Euro 6 standards, which generally meant they were registered after late 2016. There’s something of a problem in the fact that many fleets are now running older vehicles that would’ve been seen before the pandemic. In pre-Covid times, there would have been very few six-year-old-plus vans being used by fleets but factors such as low production volumes in recent years mean that there are now more than in the past.
While the drive to reduce toxic pollutants from our high streets and surrounding neighbourhoods has been welcomed by many, others are worried such measures will have serious implications for local residents, business owners and hospital visitors, to name a few.
