New Fiesta Van: adds style to hatchvan sector

Ford Fiesta Van road test Review: Mark Bursa

Ford Fiesta Van Trend 1.4 TDCi 68PS

What is it?

Ford refreshes its offering in the hatchvan sector with an all-new Ford Fiesta Van, based on the well-received new Ford Fiesta 3-door bodyshell. Our test van is the mid-range Trend model, aimed at small business users.

What’s hot?

  • Smart looks a significant upgrade on previous boxy Fiesta van
  • Loadspace only slightly compromised: 1cu m (v 1.013cu m in old Fiesta)
  • And has rubber liner; four DIN tie-down hooks; half-height bulkhead
  • Full-height mesh bulkhead is optional – and DIN compliant too
  • Driveability is improved thanks to new Fiesta’s electric power steering
  • Engine from old Fiesta van: CO2 emissions a class-leading 110g/km
  • Capless refuelling system standard to prevent mis-fuelling
  • Cab is very roomy, and stylish dashboard is straight from the car
  • Lots of nice details standard on Trend: electric folding door mirrors…
  • …as well as heated front screen; auto lights/wipers; fogs; auto-dim mirror

What’s not?

  • Payload is less than the old Fiesta van – 515kg against 541kg
  • Load length is shorter and narrower than the old Fiesta van…
  • …though between-the-wheel arches distance is greater
  • Prices have gone up – base spec is £525 more than equivalent old Fiesta
  • New Fiesta Van has composite blanking panels on rear side windows…
  • …old Fiesta van had solid metal side panels

Business Van Manager Road Test Rating

The hatchvan sector now has some seriously funky players – Corsa, Peugeot 207, Citroen C2 – and the new Fiesta van is probably the funkiest of the lot. Class of the field? Only if looks were everything! Using such a sporty body as the basis for a van has been at the expense of practicality, with payload and loadspace reduced from the previous, more boxy Fiesta van. And the new model obviously shows its car roots – there are no rear seats, but there are cupholders in the side panels! On the plus side it looks great and is a pleasure to drive, while the Trend spec gives a generous upgrade on the base model.

Option prices: Bluetooth hands-free and voice control, £250; Electronic Stability pack (ESP/ABSTraction Control/Emergency Brake Assist), £250; Full bulkhead, £100; Manual Air Conditioning, £400; Metallic paint, £250; Rear window protector, £75; Reverse parking sensor, £250; Perimeter Alarm, £150.
