Ford Ranger with trailer

Remember: different speed limits apply when towing

The first scenario may apply if, say, you are removing a load of rubble from a builder’s site and taking it to a dump.

You are being paid to do so but technically the goods (ie the load of rubble) are not for hire or reward.

It’s a moot point though and we’d advise checking with DVSA first.

This second scenario may well just apply to you, but beware that if DVSA officers catch you and you are on the cusp of that magic figure, they won’t just accept your story without a lot of poking and prying.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has published a handy booklet “Trailer Towing Guidance and the Law” that will help. It costs £6 plus p & p and can be ordered from www.smmt.co.uk/reports-publications
