Huge petrol engines are the way forward for US pick-ups, though Ford now calls them EcoBoost

“While our customers want a big, tough-looking vehicle, they also want their lifestyle features. The boxy shape actually performed better than you might think in the wind tunnel and we have kept that big, big grille at the front – we wanted to make sure that when you come up behind someone that grille fills their rear view mirror.”

The new F-150 will hit showrooms with a five-way engine choice. The 3.5-litre EcoBoost, 3.7-litre V6 and 5-litre V8 units are carried over from the outgoing model and joined a new 2.7-litre EcoBoost. All the engines are petrol units – diesel is another phenomenon that doesn’t really register with US pick-up owners, although Reyes adds that it is being looked at for the future.

And if you are a UK buyer desiring an F-150? Hard luck – this strictly a US model and you’ll have to make do with the Ranger…
