If there is any van that needs no introduction, it must be the Volkswagen Transporter, which can trace its roots right back to the VeeDub Splitty of the 1950s.

But winning this award proves that it isn’t just the panel van versions that shine out above the rest. When it comes to carrying people to various jobs, the Kombi variant is a winner too.

Now in its sixtieth year on sale in the UK, the Transporter is Volkswagen’s best-selling van, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has seen a noticeable trend in increasing sales of the Kombi model. In fact, the Kombi used to be listed as an option, but is now a model listed in its own right.

The Kombi has the benefit of seats for six people, with side windows for the rear seat, but is still a panel van behind this to carry a generous load that can still be kept out of sight.

A key appeal of a Kombi is that it can be a tax-efficient dual use vehicle – a working van for during the day and a family vehicle in the evenings and weekends that can carry lots of sports gear for active lifestyles. You don’t need a van and a car, just a Kombi, and to make it more sociable, swiveling front seats are available to create a lounge-type area like its campervan stablemates.

And choosing a Kombi doesn’t involve sacrificing any car-like comforts either, as Volkswagen offers a range of trim levels (Startline, Trendline and Highline), giving the choice of luxury specifications, such as leather-covered, multi-function steering wheels, the latest integrated satellite navigation and leather upholstery, that can make driving a Kombi as convenient and comfortable as any Volkswagen passenger car.

There are a huge range of Transporter Kombi variants, including short or long wheelbases and roof heights to suit every need. There is even the convenience of DSG semi-automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive in case it needs to be used on difficult terrain.
