The vans cover a lot of mileage and the north London base means lots of heavy traffic. Reliability is crucial

The vans are from the new Mercedes Sprinter range introduced late last year, and recognisable by a more sculpted bonnet, near vertical, wedge-shaped radiator grille with perforated slats, and revised, more angular headlights.

They are powered by 129hp engines limited to 70mph. Fuel efficiency has been improved by 7% over the outgoing version, and BlueEFFICIENCY variants, which incorporate a number of additional features to reduce diesel consumption further, are improved by a further 6%, achieving up to 44.4mpg.

Mercedes says the Sprinter’s safety features include several ‘world firsts’, including the Crosswind Assist system, which detects sudden strong gusts of wind and helps prevent the van drifting out of its lane by applying individual brakes on one side of the vehicle.

Other electronic aids available as options include Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Highbeam Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.
