THE tough-guy reputation enjoyed by Toyota’s Hilux is richly deserved.
The 4×4 pick-up went to work helping haul stranded vehicles in East Sussex during the recent blast of ice and snowy weather that wreaked havoc in the area.
The Hilux hitched up to a Sainsbury’s heavy goods vehicle and hauled the artic lorry up a slippery slope, allowing the truck to complete its deliveries. This type of vehicle can weigh up to 44 tonnes when fully loaded.
The four-wheel-drive Hilux pick-up had been provided by local Toyota dealership SLM Motors of Uckfield to help rescue vehicles in difficulty on a particularly icy stretch of road.
The Hilux has carved its place as a tough and capable workhorse through various exploits featured on BBC TV’s Top Gear, including driving to the North Pole.
And earlier this year, a Hilux took second place on the arduous Dakar Rally, described as the world’s toughest off-road motorsport event, running for two weeks over 5000 miles through the deserts of Peru, Argentina and Chile.
The Hilux underwent a comprehensive revamp in 2012 with exterior and interior redesigns and adjustments to the 142bhp 2.5 D-4D and 169bhp 3.0 D-4D engines to comply with Euro 5 standards.
The Toyota Hilux pick-up is available in the following configurations (Ex-VAT on the road prices):
