AHEAD of the first Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) being introduced in London on April 8, Northgate, said it will be taking part in the new TfL vehicle scrappage scheme by offering a discount on 12 months+ van hires.

Under the TfL Flexible Scrappage scheme, businesses can apply for a grant of £3,500 if they prove to have entered the existing Congestion Charging Zone (CCZ) 52 times in the last six months and provide a certificate of destruction for a non-compliant vehicle.

Northgate’s new Scrappage Scheme Discount on hires over 12 months can make the extra cash injection go a long way. With one regular payment that includes all servicing, maintenance and road tax, businesses can hire a new Euro 6 compliant van to be exempt from the new ULEZ charges.

Alternatively, businesses that are registered in London and provide a certificate of destruction for a non-compliant vehicle along with a log book, can apply for a grant of £3,500 under the Scrappage and Buy/Lease option.

Buying a new Euro 6 compliant van through Van Monster will ensure the rebate is well invested as the vans come with a price match, 6-month warranty, and flexible finance options.

The launch of the scrappage scheme follows ongoing calls from across the industry for help for small fleets, which are faced with the high costs of updating their vehicles. In an attempt to help micro-businesses – defined as those with fewer than 10 employees – the initiative encourages scrapping older, more polluting vans and switching to cleaner vehicles.

From 8 April, operators running vehicles that don’t meet the Euro 4 standard for petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles and Euro 6 for diesel versions of these vehicles, will have to pay £12.50 a day to drive in central London. The charges will apply 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

Zipcar UK is also offering a bespoke package to London businesses, providing match funding for businesses planning to scrap their diesel vans as part of the Mayor’s diesel scrappage scheme.

It will also offer ‘free for life’ Zipcar UK business accounts worth £99 a year.

Once approved businesses can register for a Zipcar for Business account, Zipcar UK will then match fund up to a total of £3,500 of any credit the business chooses to add to their new account using the scrappage allowance

Zipcar UK has helped TfL to develop this package to enable businesses to take the first step in moving away from private van ownership.

Jonathan Hampson, General Manager for Zipcar UK, said: “Hopefully this will also help tip the balance in favour of vehicle sharing rather than vehicle owning, which we believe is the way forward for London. We already work with 14,000 businesses in the UK and hope to partner with and support many more over the coming months. “
